I^m Richer Than I Realized

It's amazing to me how many rich people I suddenly have around me. Just a few years ago I was living in a middle class neighborhood where people worked as nurses, truck drivers, government bureaucrats, salesman, etc. Suddenly, there's a bunch of rich folks living in the neighborhood. I don't know how it happened right under my nose without me seeing it, but as quick as you can say 'Real Estate bubble', I'm surrounded by wealth.

It seems like only yesterday when I first moved into the neighborhood. It was a little suburb on the outskirts of the city. Back then the homes consisted mostly of brick ranchers and were priced so that the average working class person could afford to buy a house here. But then the rich descended upon us. All of a sudden I'm seeing houses that were selling for little more than $100,000 less than 5 years ago now selling for $400,000. And the new houses that they're building starting in the low $600,000's?, I'm wondering how my modest little neighborhood has all of a sudden become a mecca for the wealthy?

The odd thing is, all these 'new' rich people look the same as the not so rich people that have lived here for years. Joe Smith is still my next door neighbor like he has been for years, but all of a sudden he's rich. So is Betty Boop two doors down, and Henry Hanson across the street. All of a sudden they've all become rich and live in houses that are worth a small fortune, and have a couple of these 'new' Cadillac's sitting in their driveways.

Speaking of Cadillac's, the one's I remember were bigger than boats, and had radios that would only play 'easy listening' music. But now you see Cadillac's that have fancy names like 'Escalade' and play Hip Hop and all kinds of music, even Rock and Roll and Country. Sitting out here on my porch I watch these new Cadillac's go by, and other vehicles with names like Hummers, Excursions, Pilots, Expeditions, Durangos and other gas guzzling monsters and makes me wonder how people can afford to put gas in them, let alone pay for them. A vehicle costing $50,000? That's just a little less than I payed for my house. I guess paying $50,000 for a vehicle is nothing for my newly rich neighbors.

Yes, I guess I need to face facts that I'm no longer living in a working class neighborhood but now reside among the 'movers' and 'shakers' of society. Although I still drive my 1999 Plymouth Breeze, I'm thinking that since I now live among the wealthy that maybe I should go out and buy me something that's more becoming of my new financial position. I've always wanted a Stingray Corvette, and since I'm richer than I realized, why not? As someone once said to me, "you can afford anything you want, you just have to stretch out the payments longer".
