Placing a card over the words that you shouldn’t be reading yet would help you block out the “distractions” and would help you concentrate more on the passages that you are supposed to read.

Another good speed reading technique that you might want to try is “the sweep” technique. Cup your dominant hand and use it to “underline” the words or lines that you are trying to read. This will help you focus more on what you are reading by putting more emphasis on just the things that you should be reading.

Another point to consider is that you should have a good posture while reading. Sit down with your back straight in order to help you get a good starting position. You must also be a good reader even before attempting to learn how to speed-read. Speed reading is not all about developing comprehension skills and your vocabulary; you should at least be well versed or you’ll just get confused while trying to quicken your reading pace.
